1. Clean our new shed and transfer all of our "outdoor" equipment into it.
2. Paint our new basement door.
3. Start spackling our newly drywalled kitchen and living room ceilings.
4. Can some homegrown tomatoes!
(That last one has nothing to do with this post, its merely a hint at possible blog posts to come. Or maybe not. Depends how long the other three take.)
Of course, a four item to-do list on a Saturday doesn't have anything top secret about it, but the reason behind each item on the to-do list hints at something much larger happening in the near future.
Guess what?
We're fixing up our entire house this fall!
Why?
So we can sell it in the spring, silly.
Why?
Because we're MOVING HOME NEXT SUMMER!!!!
Yes! We are so excited.
But why on earth would we want to leave Vermont?
That's a great question. Leaving Vermont is going to be hard on my soul, hard on my heart and hard on my body. Do you know that the last time I left Vermont I had a headache the entire time I was gone? I'm only mildly alarmed that I spent most of my absence in the Ohio River Valley.
So why...Why are we going back?
It's no secret that Seth and I plan on moving to every place that we visit. We even went so far as to look at houses in Wyoming last winter. All dreaming aside, we've been considering moving home since April or May (not coincidentally, while spring and the dogwoods were blooming in all they're Kentucky glory while Vermont was still covered in the depths of a snow mud frigid cold season. The only plus side was that the black flies weren't out yet.) We have a pretty long record of "deciding" to move, telling everyone and then not moving, but we knew we couldn't toy with people on this one. We didn't tell anyone we were considering it (not even Paul and Kelly!)
Then in July we visited Dad and Cindy in Colorado, and before we left decided amongst ourselves that we were moving to Colorado Springs next summer. How excited we were! Seth even called and tried to set up a job interview, but unfortunately the lady he needed to speak to was evacuated from the Waldo Canyon Fire and he didn't hear back before we left.
Colorado Springs has most of the benefits of the Cincinnati area - cheap cost of living, cheap real estate, close to motorcycle racing, slightly more centralized than VT, close to some (if not all) family - as well as some the important perks of being West that Seth longs for - being near mountains and within driving distance of Jackson Hole.
Anyway, on our way back from Denver we stopped in Cincinnati where I had a meeting at work. At said meeting I was told that I have more career potential at Car-Part if I live in Kentucky and can work at the office. Of course this is something I've always known in my brain, but hearing someone else say it really made it real. It made me think about what I want instead of just floating along in a dream world. It brought my heart and my brain onto the same level. So Seth and I discussed it and then we decided ... we're moving home!
(Basically if you haven't figured it out yet you have Jeff to thank if you're excited about this news.)
I can only assume that you are at least as excited as we are. To set your minds to daydreaming, here are some of the things we're looking forward to about living in Kentucky.
Joanna - Julie's having a baby! I hereby offer free babysitting. (Anne taught me how to change a diaper and I now consider myself an expert on infants.)
Seth - Buying our own land and riding motorcycles every day! EVERY DAY!
Joanna - Monthly book exchange parties at our house! Time and date tbd. Stay tuned!
Seth - Closer proximity to motorcycle racing events!
Joanna - Being able to go to all the family events! ALL OF THEM!
Seth - Cheaper cost of living means he can buy a new motorcycle. Right?
Joanna - Only if I get one too!
Seth - More motorcycle racing means maybe racing the BAJA and the DAKAR are actual possibilities, and not just pipe dreams afterall!
Joanna - Cicadas! Vermont summers are so quiet!
Seth - Drought = better motorcycle riding conditions.
Joanna - Quilting Bees with Mom!
Seth - Free tuition at UC means he can get his PhD for free. Right?
Joanna - Longer growing season (and I believe Seth already mentioned we're going to get our own land) means I can grow a huge vegetable garden! The possibilites are endless!
Seth - Cheaper cost of living, and better income means we can still get a cabin in Wyoming. Right?
Of course right. Summer 2013. See you then...
